This is the Don Quixote that all the other Ballet Companies try to emulate,it was recorded live at the Paris National Opera House in the April of 2002,to the choreography of Rudolf Nureyev. Poor old Don Quixote(DQ)here being played very ably by JEAN MARIE DIDIERE.We start our performance with DQ being carried into his home by two peasants that seem hell bent on burning his books,but they are shown short shrift and put out,but DQ has ghosts of his own to struggle with,memories still alive to him.It is here that we meet Sancho /FABIEN ROQUES who is chased into his room for stealing meat,taken under the wing of DQ and our travels now begin. At the Inn we find Kitri /AURELIE DUPONT being a little stand offish to Basil/ MANUEL LEGRIS,both flirting,and here is where our Ballet starts in all essence. The basic story is that Basil and Kitri want to get married but the Innkeeper would prefer to sell her to a Dandy,so they run away together being found by Gypsies led by Le Gitan/Karl Paquette who are prepared to hide them for cash.Upon DQ's arrival at this camp a puppet show is put on,all going well until he decides to attack the wagon it is taking place on,once again seeing those Demons of his, not being satisfied he proceeds to fight a windmill (and losing)being carried up into the air (caught on the windmill's sail)and dropped back to the ground. Here the play goes off at a tangent,DQ in his unconscious state has a dream,this is where we are introduced to the Dryads,one of the most beautiful parts of this Ballet. Upon return to the Inn our pair are finally married,and our play comes to an end. What can one say!everyone that performs on this disc does a splendid job,the list is large;we have dancers of such calibre here that all should get a mention,they include Marie Agnes Gillot,Delphine Moussin,Clairemarie Osta,Fanny Fiat,Lauren Queval,Melanie Hurel,Veronique Doisneau and Jean-Guillaume Bart.But believe me the corps de ballet are also equal to their task's.
